In the hope that some of you read this and maybe spread this around:

Warsow is a free, awesome, fast paced online FPS based on the quake II engine. The aesthetics of the game are simple, but beautiful. It has a sort of futuristic cartoonish theme. It's been around since, I think, 2005 and it's massively addicting.

I used to play this like crazy before I went to uni and started renting a room at a student home. For some reason it wouldn't work on my uni connection so sadly I had to stop playing. Recently, I decided to give it another try, and for whatever reason (hell if I know) it works again.

Sadly, the community is now but a shell of how I remember it used to be. I can't even find a server with my favourite gametype and map anymore. (instagib capture the flag (ictf) on ... wctf1 or something. I think it was actually an old quake map)
Playing again gave me a huge nostalgia rush, but actually really made me sad that the vibrant community has left.

There's still many people playing though, but I'd love to see the community grow again. Too many empty servers.

ANYWAY, I made this topic to advertise the game a bit, hoping to get some of you interested (or maybe back to playing if you've played this before), and I'm probably not doing a very good job since I'm all sad and melancholic now. So I'll be honest and admit I also made this topic simply to baww a bit about what feels like losing a part of my childhood (even if it was only three years ago). :p

So if anyone feels like playing a few games, let me know :D
I'm always up for it!
Maybe we could get a HoN team together to play (like we kind of... sort of... once did on Gunz with PW :p )

Just owned some kid annoying everone in-game.
Then he tried to get me kicked, probably for getting more kills than him...

I'll give it a shot. Literally, too.

But I doubt I'll be able to end up addicted to it as I have uni. But if we're planning a game sometime, just advertise in advance and I'll try to make it.

Yeah same here, really. I just play a game during breaks now and then, and one to wake up in the morning xD

meh, I don't like the whole "one-hit-kill" system... That means that, if someone sees me from across the map, then it's over... I mean, where's the fun in that? Besides that, you earn your powerups and weapons by getting killstreaks, meaning that if you have some bad luck, you end up in a terrible situation with several people who overpower you easily.

(not to mention the incredibly slow reload times on the basic weapons)

I take it you've played the "iagungame" gametype?
There's different game types, not all of them instagib.
Sadly most people seem to be playing ica (instagib team elimination) duel or races... I miss ctf

I do prefer instagib games, though. And I quite like the iagungame type. They're fast paced and fun.
Of course at first it's frustrating, but you learn. Oftentimes staying alive isn't too important, just that you get more kills then others :p
Even if you die more than you've killed. I often find myself on first place or second after a game where I really thought I'd be placed last based on how often I got killed.
I will say, though, that the most important thing is to learn how to get speed. Which is not to say that I find everyone flying across the room in bipbeta2 fun... but just learning movement and how to get speed and not lose it does make the game more fun and less frustrating. Of course the importance of it is relative to the gametype.

Regular dm or tdm games are fun too, though I don't often find anyone playing them them anymore. And of course a bad consequence of so little people (compared to what I remember 2 years ago) playing anymore is that you often are faced with pro's that have been playing all this time...

Then again it's not that much of a problem all the time.

The vast and furious! That was the ctf map I meant!
I loved that map T_T

It's an old quake map, but I can't seem to find it anymore... Well, I found a download, but it's for quake and I'm not sure if it's possible to just transfer them without editing... Maybe.

I did play some ctf games earlier, though :D
That made my day. One of the maps was also one I used to play a lot.

I DID download the community map pack which has a map in it that seems to be based on the "vast and furious" map. It looks different, but it looks modelled after the quake map. Definitely giving it a try later on.

If it plays the same, that would really make my day :D

edit: the quake map works, technically, but there's no music and the bots apparently also need to be edited to play better and shoot worse >_> (at least in instagib)

The warsow community pack map based on it works well, but the aesthetics of the quake map are more pleasing to me than the warsow one, even though it does fit better with the whole theme.

I may look into this again this weekend. Pretty sure I've checked into it once, or seen the name in passing a few times.
