So I Acted in a Film

Yesterday I was an extra in a film involving around 1000 people that was shot in Piccadilly Circus in London. Apparently it was the second largest film production held in Piccadilly Circus. Second to the last Harry Potter movie, I think. Someone even covered it for CNN's iReport. The film is called 51 Degrees and it is a disaster movie about a meteor about to hit London, told through the eyes of a German documentary producer. Or something like that at least.

Here's a rundown of my scene:

Me and 1000 other people had to rush to the centre of Piccadilly Circus and look towards the neon lights on the buildings (which display adverts from TDK, Hyundai and occasionally the news). Then we were supposed to start screaming and panicing. Apparently the signs were supposed to say "Meteor is due to hit London in two hours".

I think the movie will be pretty corny, but it was very fun to run about and act like a madman for three hours.

When '51 Degrees' hits the cinemas (which apparently it will), make sure to check it out. Look out for a skinny guy running about in a blue and white striped hoody.

It took a lot of will not to laugh during the scene. They told us to panic by running up and down, which I thought was a little odd. In real life, when people are alerted to danger in the foreseeable future, they don't run about like madmen. If you look at footage of New Yorkers reactions to the collapse of the Twin Towers, no one was running about screaming unless they were in immediate danger of a falling building or debris. Most of them were transfixed/crying/angry/etc. But hardly anyone was hysterical to that degree. So during the first take, I merely pointed towards the large advertising screens and said something to the effect of, "Holy shit!" and attempted to give a bewildered face. But I was told that I needed to be more hysterical. So during the subsequent takes, I grabbed a female next to me and shouted, "CALM DOWN" in her face. I was going for a 1950s chauvinistic vibe, where the male protagonist would slap a woman to stop her from becoming hysterical. I doubt the cameras picked that up.

Earlier on I was invited to film another scene as an extra. I would have been playing the part of a mugger. I don't know whether they were pleased with my performance or merely typecasting me. I'm going to assume they were pleased.

That's not fair. I mean, all muggers are Black, but that doesn't mean that all blacks are muggers. (I think I'm getting a bit too racial...)
