I've been playing and loving video games ever sense I was little. Whether it be RPG, action adventure, FPS, or a hack n slash I've had fun playing video games. As I've gotten older I still enjoy video games but I often wonder: "Why is this fun? Why am I doing this?" My expectations for video games are also higher. I often find linear games unenjoyable, whether it be a single player RPG/adventure or a quest-centric MMO. It also depends on the storyline and how fun the gameplay is (naturally). Overall, I just find video games to be less and less fun at times. It makes me wonder why I play them at all. I recently read this: 5 Creepy Ways Video Games Are Trying to Get You Addicted but got distracted halfway through by the source they provided under #4:
I am definitely not addicted to video games. Some days I can play them for hours, other days not at all, and I'm perfectly fine. Depends how bored I am, really. I graduated high school and I still go out into the world with my friends and have fun away from my computer. The question is: why are video games fun? Or: why are video games fun to you? |

it's hard to explain... I have a strange mixture of ADD and OCD... I never feel right until I have everything in a game, yet I find that, in order to get everything, I have to fight myself. Like in this one game, Theif: Deadly Shadows that I just started. So far, I've not even been doing much of the actual quest, just making sure I find and steal every piece of loot. I hate how boring it is, especially when I die and have to redo it, but I also just love the satisfaction of selling it all to Heartless Perry or Black Market bertha... sad, eh? That is kind of sad. Fortunately I don't feel the need to collect every little thing in games. Although I really do love stealing things. If a game allows for stealing I do ENJOY stealing everything in sight but it isn't so much a need as it is just fun for me. I guess video games can be fun if you get to steal things in them. XD I think part of the freedom and unique experience from real life makes them interesting as well. Sometimes I wish I could travel the world on foot/by mount and do quests and barter and trade. But that'd take a lot of work and right now it is really hot outside and walking down to the store is enough of a challenge. |

I'm not as into video games as I used to be, however when I do play games I tend to try and find/hoard everything. Especially secret collectables, items, locations, etc. Searching for the hidden things is what usually gets me hooked. However a lot of the time now I only play games if I'm playing a multiplayer mode with my brother or a friend, which is rare. |

I grew up reading books up until about high-school. Video games are a lot like books in a sense; they can both tell a story. I don't read much anymore (outside graphic novels anyways) but I'm always up for a good storyline. How I come to know that story is irrelevant, be it the written word, a first person shooter, or a MMORPG; I'm just in it to see how it all plays out. I could careless whether or not it's a story I had a hand in, or if it's as linear as a plain old book. All I ask is that it have some substance to it. I am known to partake in the shooter every now and then. In three days I've hit level 27 on CoD:BO. Partially cause I'd like to one up a friend of mine, partially cause I'm tired of playing EVE so much, and partially cause I was bored. There's also a certain joy that comes from interacting with other people, even on such a limited scale as CoD. Call it a reminder that life exists outside these walls I call home. |
