In case you don't know, or if FamilyVideo is not in your area (hell, I don't even know if it is more than 4 locations~), FamilyVideo is a video/videogame rental store. Now, this being said, they have some fancy equipment so that, if a disc is scratched and made unplayable in DVD players or consoles, the machine will fix the scratches and clean the disc. However, I have borrowed three (count 'em THREE!) games from this store and attempted to play them on my PS2 that has been sitting, idle, in my room for months, maybe even a year. The first game I borrowed was Evil Dead: Regeneration, based on the cult classic series of movies: Evil Dead, starring the legendary Bruce Campbell (who now is playing another role as a overweight spy, but that is besides the point). I was really hyped up for this game, because I have Evil Dead: Fistful of Boomstick, and hoped (and heard) that it would be reminiscent of that gem of a game. But, when I put the game into my PS2 and turned it on, "The disc could not be read." I figured, "OK, that's fine, it's probably because the game has a few scratches on it that the machine didn't fix, I'll go to the store tomorrow and get a new game." So, I go to FV, and end up taking out another copy of ED: R, hoping that the problem was simply the disc, however, it had the same problem as the first. Obviously, at this point, I am wondering if some sort of trauma happened to my PS2 while it was idle, but I didn't check it. Instead, I went to FV again, had them re-clean and de-scratch the game and also borrowed a copy of Dirge of Cerberus, just in case. When I go home, I find that neither game works, so, in my frustration, I realize that the problem must lie with my PS2, but I am still not convinced, so, I take out the most scratched up game I can find and throw it into my PS2 (the game was Tokyo Extreme Racer 3, btw) expecting to find the same error (only because it was so scratched up, honestly) but instead, I get to play the game for 30 minutes and nothing goes wrong! So, the near-flawless games that I borrowed from a company with scratch repair technology doesn't work, but my most scratched up, fucked up, and worthless game does??? SCREW YOU FAMILY VIDEO! I wasted over 15 dollars in that damn store! And ya know what? I bet I can't get a refund! |

I had a similar experience sometime in March/April. I found a copy of Ico for £25 at a second hand gaming store called cEX. Ico can only be found online and it's roughly £40-60, so it's a very expensive game. Anyway, I played it for a few days and it worked perfectly. But during this one bit it just froze during a bit where I had to leave the map for another area (you know when it goes black to allow the transitioning between maps and areas?). Well I took it for a refund and they told me I needed to have it repaired before the warranty works. I had it repaired on the spot, but it wouldn't work when I brought it home again. So I took it back again for a refund and they opted to repair rather than give me a refund. However I had my exams that time so I needed to forgo any video-gaming for until June. I just found out the warranty and the repair time has expired. I'm stuck with a broken £25 game! I gotta stop spending money... |

ICO, which I've played in bits, is a rather awesome game. Also, that's BS, the people who sold it to you should have done the repairs before selling it or offered to repair it for free. Meh. That sucks, Chrono. It won't be long before Video Game (and possibly Movie) rentals will be obsolete. With Netflix, Gamefly, OnLive, and PSN/Live etc... traditional rentals are bound to die. What I really hate are the mofos that rent a DVD or game and treat it like trash, scratching it up, and then returning it for some poor fool to rent out. |

Ico, fantastic, not just awesome... Same sentiments on the repairs. I would hate for that to happen, especially because I have an interview there on the 14th. I also hate those people. |

I got a free copy of GTA4 from a rental place because it was horribly scratched. Somehow I got it working. It froze after a few minutes but free is free. |
