I live surrounded by trees an hour from Edmonton, Alberta. I do one of three things for hobbies usually: Video games, reading (sci-fi mostly), or... wait I dun think I really have anything to put here. I am boring... ::sob:: I speak German and want to learn another language sometime in the future. In case you were wondering my username is "Snowraptor" in German. I also have some skill in programming though only in Visual Basic. My school has a shit computer program. Its a miracle I was able to learn what I know. Currently in Grade 11, 16 yrs old. I want to get into the making of video games but not forever. Either I start my own studio or I move onto other programming ventures. My top foods: RIBS. That is all. |

Just wondering; did you teach yourself German? Or are you of German heritage? |

Heritage. My dads side of the family is German. I also did take classes to help. I really do not see how someone can teach themselves a language. Written maybe, but when it comes to the speaking.. ugh... good luck with that It is rather odd I spose |

All my opinion here, but I think language itself is genetic. We're designed to have one. Hence how when we're very young we can learn new languages insanely quick, and how we can pick up on our first language. |

Which is why I think schools should be teaching secondary languages BEFORE you hit high school. I noticed a lot of foreign countries (Portugal, Japan, Belgium, Sweden) teach English and other languages early on. In Sweden, it's around middle school, from what Johann has mentioned. |

It's weird, there's a strong German influence in my mum's family from her father, but we don't know any German besides Gutentag. We're planning to go there sometime. I taught myself Spanish. I'm not good speaking it, but I can understand it and write it quite well. I'm also good at understanding East Caribbean Creole, but even though I'm sure I can speak it moderately, I prefer not to. As for my father's languages, I don't know anything about them asides from what the Lion King has taught me about Swahili. |

I started learning French in Grade 4, mandatory. From grade 4-9 I had to deal with it and the bitch teacher that taught it. I have since forgotten all of it, course I did not really care. |

Yeah, English is mandatory from 5th grade up to 9th, then you can choose which language you want for high school. French kicks in during 7th grade and goes up to the 9th aswell, and then you can choose to keep it or drop it. Some primary schools teach english from the 1st grade aswell, which I find bad because kids can't even write in portuguese yet. 3rd grade would probably be better, imo. Also, it's not that hard to learn how to speak a language if you have a TV. I learned how to speak spanish watching Doraemon, and I'm pretty damn good at it ._. But then again, my mother language is similar to it, so.. meh. |

We're not "designed" to have one. Humans just happen to be very advanced at communicating compared to other animals. |

We're designed to pick up language in a certain developmental stage very early on. Humans are definitely designed to read one another and understand other's thoughts and emotions. That's a huge part of the human biology and social-cognitive abilities. They say that the reason we evolved our huge brains so fast from our primate ancestors was because- well, the driving force was dealing with each other. |

While that's all true, I just don't like the word "designed". It implies a maker. It also implies reason instead of cause. |

No. You're not "designed" to have something, else someone born in Portugal wouldn't forcefully learn portuguese, even if they moved to Italy when they were two months old and never had any contact with portuguese. You're using the wrong word, for sure. |

Designed was a poor word choice on my part. Intended maybe? *shrug* |

What about those savage kids that are found abandoned in the woods, much like monkeys and shit like that? They never actually learn any language, but when they're "found" by regular humans and start socializing with them, they find new ways of communicating with said regular humans. Which would support
that. |
