Psychic Language; #1 in the bus debate series

Me and my friend had an interseting debate on the bus ride home today. Can language exist in a sentient species that communicates through telepathy?

I argued that it cannot exist. The thought processes involved in coming up with the thoughts in the first place would be transferred instantly to those that are communicating. His argument was that a formalized structure would develop to these thought packages. We both agreed however that a body language to accompany would develop. Smiles do count as a form of communication.

Your thoughts?

Well telepathy implies that there is some form of psychic energy involved that is able to transmit and receive signals; similar to a wifi of the brain if you may.

Now it gets difficult, because although for the most part we could argue that telepathy does not exist in humans, when we place that context into hypothetical creatures it gets a little complicated.
You would have to definitively prove that the sentient creatures form of communicating is definitely some form of mental wave sent out, rather than perhaps a complexed system of immiting chemical signals that might appear to be psychic in nature but due to the discreteness of it is more like an ants' method of communication of using smells and subtle body language rather than John Edwards.
Think about it, if we were to meet an extraterrestial or something of that ilk, it might appear that they are being silent and communicating through their minds, but at the same time various other subtle things could be occurring. The fact that these creatures are so complexed would render any presupposed understanding of them useless. So if we were in that situation, our first thought shouldn't be on whether or not they have psychic powers. Then we'd have posit the problem of placing one's thoughts into another being's mind. As it stands, you cannot see into my mind and I cannot see into yours. How could a brainwave sent from one being into another being's brain result in that being being able to accurately interpret the feelings, emotions and even something as complex as thoughts?

Secondly, what would the evolutionary advantage be towards communicating psychicly rather than audibly or other methods? Evolution generally seems to take the easy way out with regards to boosting the adaptive advantage of a creature. By all means it would be easier to adapt some form of vocal system.
However if you're dealing with extraterrestials, then the possibilities are literally limitless. The universe is infinitely large so that does make a possibility that anything like that couild happen. So it could happen and there is a possibility that it has. It's like the saying "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy." The possibilities are limitless.

I guess one argument to counter the whole "If we can't send psychic messages then they can't" is that we're operating on humancentric views of the world. There are many other complex things various animals can do which we can do, such the ant which can send complex messages through chemicals. So just because we can't use telepathic messages, it doesn't rule out other creatures.
But even so it seems a stretch.

So I doubt it. But it isn't impossible, if that makes sense.
