So, I usually consider myself eclectic when it comes to music. If I listen to a song and find it catchy, I don't care about it's genre, I just like it. From Lady Gaga, Four Year Strong, City And Colour, Blackout, System of a Down, Britney Spears, Glee, I'm into most shit that sounds good in my ears. The other day, while watching Glee, I reheard "Push It", originally by Salt 'N Pepper. Usually, people call this type of songs as "rap" or "hip hop" or some shit, but I've heard so many different types of hip hop and rap different to this one, that I thought "This must be a specific type". I usually think of this type of music as "cheerleading music", because it's what most coreographies are danced to. Can anyone tell me exactly what genre this type of music is? If it isn't that defined, could you tell me a couple of bands that produce songs like "Push It"? I checked "Ice Ice Baby" by Vanilla Ice, and even though it's not that similar, it's sort of inside the same context, and some remixes of it might actually be good. Technotronic's Pump Up The Jam is SORT OF also in the same line of music. If you can come up with a list of epic songs inside this "genre" or maybe even a couple of bands (be them old school or modern) that produce them, I'd be greatly appreciated. Thank you for reading! |

Salt N Pepa is an old school Hip Hop group. I would still consider Push it as a part of the Old School Hip Hop genre which experimented with a lot of musical formats and wasn't as lyrically complexed and didn't have many advanced rhyme schemes as modern rap/hip hop. It had a lot of dance elements. A similar song to Push It would be Afrika Bambaataa's Planet Rock song. He's considered to be the Godfather of Hip Hop and pretty much was one of the driving forces behind the hip hop emergence in the 1980s. The proper name for the genre would just be Old School Hip Hop. You might want to look into these following Old School Hip Hop songs (be warned some of them are the "love it or hate it" kind of songs): Afrika Bambaataa - Looking For the Perfect Beat (This song is instrumental only. No lyrics. Although some of the mixes of people rapping over it can be found) Afrika Bambaataa - Just Get Up And Dance Grandmaster Flash - The Message Sugar Hill Gang - Rapper's Delight Gary Byrd & The G.B Experience - The Crown Gwen Stafani's Aint No Holla Back Girl reminds me of an Old School rap song. A little. Hope that helps! Edited by Setoshin, Nov 19 2009, 01:59 PM.

Yeah, exactly, Gwen Stefani is as close as I've gotten to Old School Hip Hop when it comes to modern artists. Thanks for the list, I'll definitely check those (L) |
