Right, so I'm upgrading my computer. Basically, right now, I just need a new gfx card and some more RAM. In the distant future I might upgrade further, but this is basically the most important to me now. My problem is, though, that I haven't a clue as to what kind of RAM I should buy. I'm looking to buy at least 4gigs. I also have a very limited budget (I don't know yet how much exactly, but to put it simply I still haven't found the secret to growing money out of my ass). I'm saying this because I've found a lot of different RAM online that's basically the same but with varying price tags (going from under 50 euros to over 100 euros). Also, what are the differences between DDR, DDR2 and DDR3, and why do they matter? (I can fathom that DDR3 is better than the preceding DDR's, I'd just like to understand why) As for my new video card I'm thinking of getting a GeForce 9800GT 1GB (ca. 150 euros), but I might have to settle with a 9500GT 1GB (ca. 80 euros). (don't know yet.) Right now I think I have GeForce 7800... If I remember correctly. Could be an even older version. As for OS, I use both vista and XP, but somewhere in the near future I'm planning to clean everything up and just install XP on my whole pc. (right now I have two drives) Does my monitor matter? If you need to know anything else, just ask. I just don't want to risk throwing my money away. It's not like I have much to spare :p My question is, would a 9500GT 1GB be enough to keep me going for a while? Or is it really worth paying more for the 9800GT 1GB (which would lead to waiting until I can afford it if it turns out I can't right now)? Is there a big difference? Also, if anyone has any other recommendations, I'd be glad to hear them. |

Computer upgrading... Always fun. I just upgraded Nubi's computer actually... Still needs a new video card but that can wait til next I visit. Anyways, your computer. Unless it was built in the last two years or so I highly doubt it'll work with DDR3 as far as memory goes. The only differences between the different versions is access speeds. DDR2 tops at 667Mhz while DDR3 is at 1000Mhz last I heard. If your computer was factory built give me a model number and I should be able to narrow down your search to specific types of ram and video cards. Video cards are fun too... Considering there is about 3 different slots they can be installed in, and not all computers have the 2 better options. All computers nowadays come with atleast 2, usually 3 or 4 PCI slots. Regular PCI slots are good for just about anything but video cards, since given the rise of graphics that's ever increasing, they can't handle access speeds required by most newer games... In other words, your frame rate would be terrible (Ever played a game with 2 or 3 FPS?) if the game actually loaded. The other two slots are AGP and PCIe. Both of these are actually designed with video cards in mind (AGP in particular, it does stand for Accelerated Graphics Port). You'll want to make sure your computer has one of these two slots (preferabl PCIe x16 as AGP is being phased out). As for video cards in general though, I have a 512MB 9200M GS in my laptop here and I can play any of the newer games (FEAR 2 anyone?). And no, if you upgrade your video card you shouldn't need to upgrade your monitor, just make sure the new card has whatever your monitor uses (most use sVGA/VGA). Some newer monitors should support newer interfaces though like S-Video and HDMI. Anyways, yeah, if you're lost give me a computer model number and a maker and I can look up the details on it. |

I'm not sure of this is it, but I assume s/n stands for serial number. 4509, then in smaller size: 01, then in much smaller size: 0080864 I added you on msn, by the way. It might make this easier. |

Right, nevermind this. Just went to the store and my computer's worthless. I'd be much better off buying a new one. So that's what I'm going to do, this summer. Or rather, my mom is, if I pass. We're partially using some of my university fund, my mom's pitching in and if I don't pass I'll have to pay back half. Thanks for the effort, though, kag. |

Hell if I know. Definitely a gaming computer, though. Something decent that can keep me going for a good amount of time. I'll just focus on passing this year, first. Edited by Anomaly, Apr 14 2009, 11:03 PM.

*sigh* Stupid tab key... You'll want atleast a 2.5GHz Dual Core CPU wit 2GB RAM and a 300GB Hard Drive with a 512MB Vid card. That's minimum. If you really want it to last though... 3Ghz Quad Core with 4GB+ RAM and a 1TB HDD with a 1GB Video Card (or 2 512MB/1GB Cards). For Hard Drives, Solid State Drives are't worth it yet. They cost too much per GB at the moment. Edited by Zanaras, Apr 15 2009, 12:07 AM.

Yeah, that's basically what I'm looking for, but I doubt I'll be able to afford it. we'll see ^^ My mate got his pretty cheap and I think it comes close to what you describe (I just doubt he has a TB HDD). It was because he had family or a friend who puts computers together, but maybe I can get a cheaper one too via my friend. He had to wait ages for it, though... ah well, worries for later. |

My sister and brother-in-law have a computer store, and they put one together for me. It's a good gaming computer, don't know the exact details (nor how to check them all, but if you want me to, tell me how and I'll give you the info), and it was about 540€. It was going to be 490€, but my mom told her to put a good audio thingie instead of a lame one, so she bought a 50€ audio thing with two speakers and a subwoofer and stuff. It plays really loud and I can feel the chair jumping sometimes o_o |

You can find all specs by going to "run" and typing in Dxdiag. (if you have xp, I don't know if it works for vista) |

what @_@ too many numbers. Windows XP Professional, Processor: Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU, E1200 @ 1.60GHz (2 CPUs) Memory: 2048MB RAM Hard Drive: 298 GB It's not so good as I thought. 1.60GHz sounds kind of low compared to what Aurelias was saying. |

I think it is NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT (If it is the thing under "Visualisation" or something), but I'm not sure if that's the videocard. Then again, reading the topic, I'm pretty sure it is the videocard. |
