What were you doing by the watermelons?

My friend just lent me her game, and then I figured out that it was bad, told her, and she realised how bad it was. Though I'd share these with you :P . I'll post two now, then update as I feel like it, OR I get a new game, OR I borrow someone else's game.

Okami
Well, this come across as a great idea. You play through the storyline and use a brush to draw things in or cut things in half. There are 13 such skills you can learn to use. This is a little bit like "Drawn to Life" for DS, but DtL is much more interactive as far as the drawing is concerned.

Okami is about an area of feudal Japan (basically an Inuyasha game, without any of the characters) where there is a monster called the Orochi. It's defeated by a white wolf a warrior from the local village. Then, years and years later, you see some idiot take the warriors sword out and release the Orochi. Then the sun god Ameratsu comes down and makes the statue of the white wolf come to life. You and a small... insect named Issun and the spirit of the Sakura tree try to vanquish the evil.

One of the problems with Okami is that it made to look like a Japanese drawing. It dosen't work so well when things move, because they "wipe" themselves across the page and it's also hard to see their facial features. The music is fine, but everyone talks backward, which is really annoying, and you have to read the long conversations you have with EVERYBODY! The local price is about $40, which isn't really worth it. I would wait for $30, or even less.

Reli's Rating: ** (/5)
With a lot of dialog, a slow pace, and a plot that leaves some things to be desired, there is no way this can get top marks. The only reason for the second star is that at some points, you appreciate the beauty of the artwork, and that the attempt at interactivity is appreciated.

Fire Emblem: Radient Dawn
For anyone who liked the Fire Emblem series, this is a must have. It has changed parts of the game and made it slightly more complex in terms of game play, but it still works out o being my favorite so far.

Breaking Dawn is the sequel to "FE: Path of Radiance", in which Ike(the hero) and the Crimean army defeats King Ashnard of Daein. Radiant Dawn includes four parts where you can play as many different groups and several main characters. If you played PoR before, you can see several familiar faces return to fight with you.

Unfortunately, The graphics were not improved much from PoR. There are some slight improvements, but it's still pretty much the same. The music, as always, is very good. The plot is kinda dull, especially when compared to other games from Fire Emblem. However, if you replay the game, you can find out more things, as some extra information is brought to light in your second play-through. You can also save mid-game, making it much easier to survive and play. The re playability of this, and all FE games, is very good, as you can choose different characters to train and use. Also if a character dies, they are actually dead most of the time and you can't use them again, unless you start over.

Reli's rating:*****
For the amount of time you spend with is $50 isn't an overprice. It may seem harder than the other FE games, but it also presents a challenge to vets. Just keep at it, and you'll realize how fun it is.

Mario Kart: Wii
Wonderful part of the series that spans... *counts* 5 other systems, both console and hand held. Features a great blend of old and new, with great emphasis on utilizing the Wii features.

Mario Kart is one of Nintendo's most famous series, making it a very popular game. As such, a lot is expected of it. Mario Kart: Wii meets any expectations I personally had for it. The new courses are very well crafted and the new characters and old are amazing. The gameplay is now even more realistic with the Wii Wheel, which adds a little more depth to the experience. With 8 cups (32 courses total!) there is much to do!

Nintendo has made a point of bringing back more popular areas from past games. Sherbet Land and DK's Jungle Parkway from N64, DK Mountain and Peach Beach from GC and Delfino plaza and Yoshi Falls from DS. There are even stages from Gameboy Advance and a few from Super Nintedo. All of these courses have been revamped to make them Bigger, better and faster. All of them retain their retro style however.

The graphics on all of the courses is very good, but there are two points that annoy me a little. The battles are very fast and it's hard to win because you are put on a team with some computer players. If you get stuck with a dead-beat team, you have no hope of winning. The other is some of the sound effects. They get pretty repetitive, especially when you preform several tricks in a row.

The two biggest changes brought with the Wii are the addition of the Wii Wheel and Internet connectivity. The Wii wheel acts with the sensor bar to make it so you actually steer the car. The Internet connectivity allows you to race (or battle) people worldwide. Using a point system, you always race people that are about your skill level, the more you win, the faster your opponents get.

Reli's rating: *****
A must buy for any self-respecting Wii owner. It will keep you locked in for hours, and keep your interest for a long time with amazing replayability. And if you get too good for the computer players, go online and play against other people who are to good for it. There's always a challenge when it comes to Mario Kart Wii.

Pokemon Revolution
Hmmmmmmmm.... Wow. This game is pretty awesome. It was a real step up from XD and Colosseum. While it isn't an RPG, it still has a niche as a fitting Pokemon Stadium sequel.

You copy Pokemon from a Diamond or Pearl (probably Platinum later =3) game's Pokemon and use them to battle computer players that are... a bit more challenging because they offer "Battle Frontier" like matches. My personal favorite is the one where you spin a wheel to randomly receive some of your own and your opponents Pokemon (the slight downside is, obviously, they might get your Torterra and you get stuck with a Pidgey :( ).

Your other two big advantages are the customization of your character and the new battle animations. As far as trainers go, it's pretty good. There are three boys (a young boy with a youngster-esque, a teen/cool trainer and a muscular man about 20) and three girls (girl equivalents of the first two then a really young girl to contrast the huge man). Each character has several sets of clothes that can be mixed to create many different looks. The downside is, no matter how awesome that cowboy hat looks, your little girl wont get to put it on. ::sob:: There are a couple items that cross over, but mostly each character type has to stick with certain clothes.

The battle animations and graphics are a big improvement on Pokemon: XD (the latest console Pokemon game). Now, you can watch your Espeon get it's lazy ass up and smack your opponent's puny little Caterpie instead of waving it's head around like an idiot. You can watch your hyper beam blast it's way across the screen. Unfortunately, there is a slight downside. If your Grimer has to charge across the screen, you can go get a cup of tea while you wait. Especially if this is going to be a repeat performance.

Revolution uses the online potential well. You can combine your best combination to battle people online. Seems cool. It usually is. Until you go up against the strategic genius with the perfectly EV trained Tyranitars, or the 6-year old with a Turtwig that seems to only know growl. There's no way of knowing who your facing or what they will pull out of their hat next.

The music is pretty good. Some of the stages you could leave on while you eat dinner to provide atmosphere (remember to turn off the announcer or your family/girlfriend/boyfriend/...dog(?) will choke when you hear the random "NO ONE'S MAKING A MOVE!") Yes the announcer is a little annoying if you take too long and say things like "WOW!" and "THAT MUST HAVE HURT!" and other really lame things. I'm pretty sure you can turn him off, so you may want to eventually.

Reli's Rating: ****
Not a knockout, but pretty good. In order to get the full experience you need a Diamond/Pearl game. You also have a crummy announcer, potential for a better online experience(I like the Mario Kart idea from the critique above^^^) and satisfactory replayability. But with the good graphics, it improves on past games giving it a solid 4/5.

I must say, I love your reviews. I don't even own a Wii but I just enjoy reading how you write them. I figured I might skim it over before I got around to reading them all fully. But I started and read straight through in an amused way.

350 renown for ya'.

Okami on the PS2 was pretty cool. Played it at my friend's house. The concept was interesting.

Wii Music
I got two new games from the holidays, but this is the one fresh inmy mind right now, so I'll do this one first.

Wii music is one of those games for me. It's really entertaining for a while, but then dies off after a week or two. There aren't any real "goals" to complete, so one must simply play the games and ..."jam".

The Jam Sessions allow you to "dub" over certain parts, allowing you to create an original peice of music. At least rhythmically. It you bring up the Music Flow Screen and press one button, you can make the entire song. Wii music is deceptive because you would think you get to play different notes. WRONG! Wii music fills in the notes for you. "So Reli", you may ask, "what happens when I don't play at the right time?" Well, it fills in a note. Notice the "a". Because Wii music decides on a note that might fit, then puts it in. Unfortunately, if your off by a quarter of a beat, your going to be holding that really bad note for a while.

The range of instruments is very good, from piano and tuba to NES horn and cheerleader (yes, seriously). Really, you could pick most instruments, with a few exceptions (most noticeably the viola and oboe). The variety of songs provides a nice blend of old a new songs, including some very nice game songs (LEGEND OF ZELDS FTW!)

There are three games. In one, you area conductor and move the Wiimote up and down, one that is similar to DDR but uses hand bells, and a timed game based on how well you can hear tones. All three are both fun and dull, but can provide some alleviation of boredom if taken in small doses.

At the end of Jam sessions, you are able to publish it. You create a CD jacket and it shows you a video (your mii(s) shot from different angles.) These are saved, so you can go back when you are better and look at how awful you were. I belive that these videos can be sent over WiFi, but I haven't explored it yet.

There are also lessons that show you different styles of music, giving you little tips if you want to replicate their sound in jams.

Reli's Rating:
Like Music:****
"Meh... music": **
Overall, Wii music is alright. If you enjoy music and laughing at yourself, this is a game that will provide something special. If you want to learn to play an instrument, pick up Guitar Hero instead.

Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
This was a great game. I have to say, it's one of the only ones that actually annoyed me so much that I couldn't stop until it was over. I just started my third play through after my really long hiatus and it still has this... charm that gets to love it every time.

I not a huge fan of LoZ games (except Ocarina of Time, most awesome game ever) but I <3 Twilight Princess. Again, another reincarnation of the original Link (ya, one of the only annoying things) lives in a little village. His friends get captured and he gets pulled into "the Twilight" where people are only spirits. You change into a wolf because you special (seriously, that's their reasoning) and, with the help of theis cat thing named Midna, you plan to rid the world of the areas covered in Twilight that were put there by the evil king of the Twilight realm... not Ganondorf.

First, the use of the Wiimote. You actually swing it like a sword! You can use your sheild to hit things and defend with the nunchuck! It's seriously mind blowing! Well, maybe it's just me. Lots of weapons make returns, but your hookshot has a claw to make it more believable and your arrows actually fall to the ground eventually, instead of hitting the sun. Some cool new weapons and some not-so-cool weapons are also introduced. As another plus, you get to ride a horse right off of the bat and only lose her when your a wolf and for a small stretch near the beginning.

The plot line is a complex, but dull at points. You get a good amount of twists that you want to keep going but it isn't good enough to really pull you in. Again, as with all LoZ games, there is no end to ugly and annoying characters. Zelda makes her not blond return, as do Gorons and Zoras. Side quests are abundant, but very hard. It's also a pretty lengthy game, which is a plus for me.

The gameplay is good. You get to use your sword while riding your horse and slash people while running. Bosses are pretty hard, but Midna is your new Navi and offers advice... sometimes. There are eight special moves that are learned form this undead swordsman throughout the game, which are very cool to watch and some are useful. Music is good, but some of it reminds you of older music. This, while nostalgic, can become boring and makes you want something new.

Negatives? Other than the ones I listed, its pretty easy to get lost in the beginning when you don't know how everything lies out. The maps are very small and are sometimes hard to see. You feel "stuck" a lot in dungeons when a key is no where to be found, or there just isn't anywhere to go as far as can been seen by your horrible map. You receive very little guidance when you hit a roadblock and are left to wander endlessly in circles until you get a brainwave or you luckily talk to the right person. It's also a little blurry in some forested locations, which is both annoying and pretty.

Reli's rating: *****
Still worth it's weight in stars. The amazing new innovations make the negatives seem minimal. Definitely recommended. If you liked OoT, this is the next best thing. If you liked Wind Waker, you're crazy and you'll like this much better.

Super Smash Bros.: Brawl
I cannot Believe that I haven't doen this one yet. I've had it since it first came out (however long ago THAT was) and still haven't done a review. of course, I have a hell of a lot of other games that I haven't done yet either...

So, SSB. I've liked this series ever since the N64. And two versions later we have Brawl. Have things improved? HELL YES! Have good things been sacrified in the name of progress? If there weren't, it wouldn't be Nintendo.

Characters are always the first thing that people ask about in a new game. New characters are: Ike (Fire Emblem [ loosely replacing Roy]), Wario (Mario games), Lucario (Pokemon [loosely replacing Mewtwo]), Solid Snake (Metal Gear), Zero Suit Samus (Metroid), Pit(That game that had Pit in it), Toon Link (LoZ: WW [replacing Young Link], Sonic (I'm getting tired of this) and some other ones as well... I think. Anyway, a couple of characters like Dr. Mario and Pichu were also dropped with no replacements. But all of the other characters have remained relitively the same, with the suual revamps that come with the improved graphics of the system.

While I'm on that vein, graphics are improved tenfold. Seriously.

I'd like to tell you all about the new 'adventure' portion, in which the characters of Brawl meet up in a storyline (with no words) that you play through. I actually found this quite enjoyable, especially since it forces you to use the characters that are in that particular section and not the ones you would normally choose. It was also fun to add that extra dimension onto the game and give some characters some personality specific to SSBB. However, some of the levels are a little tedious and long and it sometimes seems impossible to get a perfect score on some of them. But playing it through to the end is definetly rewarding becayse of all the videos that have been made for this portion.

As usual, the 1 player games (Classic and All Star) are a little difficult. Sure, most people can blow through Very Easy with every character, which is all well and good, but going up to Very Hard and Intense difficulty for those of us with poor tracking time is not always fun. And with that we get to one of the reasons I want to rip Nintendo's heads off. WHY DID WE GET RID OF THE N64 "RACE TO THE FINISH?" Huh? The Meelee version was awful too, but at least it existed. Now, i have to suffer through TWO rounds of hit the target (which, btw, are no longer unique to each character, but divided up into 5 levels). Nice job, taking away everything that actually made me want to play that game. Geez...

The Brawls (or multiplayer fights) are awesome as usual. There are now more characters that ever to choose from. They got rid of the 'Bonus' option for scoring (curse you nintendo) but Time, Stock and Coin scoring are all still around. Items have a few new addition, with only one of real note: the smash ball. What is the smash ball you ask? Well, I have to say it is one of the most awesome and unfair things that the SSB franchise has come up with. If a smash ball appears, the first one to break it and press B launches an impressive attack that has the potential to either seriously damage or OHKO muiltiple opponents at once. Each characters is different, so you ahve to study up on what your character can do and so you're awatre of what your opponentscan bring to the table. Some fo these are WAAAAAAAAY overpowered and others are pretty awful. but it adds a new demension to the game that increases the overall destruction. And stages? Plenty of those. Lots of new ones, and some more unique stages from Melee were brought over and slightly tuned up.

Stages. You can now build your OWN stages. Your building supplies are kind of limited, but the kind of obscene things that it will let you are hilarious (entire stages of conveyor belts, entire stages of moving platforms, spikes wherever you want >:D). Also, you no longer have to go into that stupid picture mode in order to take pictures. ANY mode you want, at any pint, simply press start and a picture can be taken. Also, the new graphics make you actually want ot use this feature adn you can come up with some pretty sweet things when you try hard enough.

The last thing (and most important to me) is the prize system. Brawl actually gives you objectives to achieve, so that the game can have somthing to work towards, which adds a new edge to it, at least for me.

The online sucks. plain and simple. i don't think it's my connection, but it takes waaaaaaaaaaaay too long to lad and sometimes give out at random times. And the lag can kill you at other points, if you manage to get a game.

Reli's Rating: ****
I love it so much, but the online kills it. Also, I personally find some of the objectives impossible and, despite having it for so long, have not yet actually achieved them all. But there is amazing re-playability potential and the only game that I know of that has a tournament feature built into it. I can't wait for the next instalment that will come in a billion years from now. :P
