Strangers by Taichi Yamada and translated by Wayne P. Lammers. Plot- Tis' a rather sad novel about a middle-aged screenplay writer who just had a divorce and is pretty much isolated in his own world. Through some circumstances he meets these strangers: one, a beautiful, somewhat younger woman who lives in the same apartment building; the other two, the spitting images and personalities of his parents as they were when they died in a tragic accident while he was still a boy of 12. How can such a coincidence be? Is it possible that they really ARE his parents? A short story about growing up and coping with life, emotions, and the past. I definitely reccommend it. Tugged on my heartstrings quite a bit towards the end. One of the most touching scenes I've ever read. TT-TT Genre: Ghost story/ coming of age Writing Style: Well translated from Japanese, the style is comtemporary- simple, direct, and easy to follow. As a novel, the story is short, but all the better for it. Rating- 9/10. |
