I thought it would be interesting to hear from everyone what they're doing nowadays. Like what do you do for a living? Or what are you studying? (are some of us still students?)

Back when I first came here I hadn't even started uni yet. Actually, when I first signed up (august 2007, almost NINE YEARS AGO) I hadn't started my last year of secondary school yet.

Since then, I think most, if not all of us have graduated by now and have possible been working for years. Hell at least one of us has two kids now! What are you guys up to now, or what kind of things have you been up to over the years? (sort of similar to topic we had on facebook, but let's do it here too :p )

Me:
I graduated as a MSc. in sociology at the end of 2014 and am now 1 year into my PhD in social health sciences. So I'm still a student but at the same time not a student. I get the best of both worlds: student benefits and almost no taxes on my salary (which is not a salary technically hehe). I've been working for a year now and we're only just now getting close to finally collecting data for my first study. The first of three studies I'll be doing. I'm expected to write 6 articles and get most of them (preferably all of them) published. I've got three years left... fuck me haha

But, as much as I'll get stressed and complain, I'm enjoying the shit out of this job and am pretty lucky to be in the position I am.
I get to do a small presentation at the EAPC congress this year in Dublin!

To balance all that adulting I'm still the singer for OLAF. The band is doing pretty well too. Had a lot of cool gigs at the end of last year. Though our guitarist is taking a 6 month break to go travelling at the moment. Sucks for us, but happy for him. But we'll figure something out with the three of us in the meantime haha.

So what about you guys?

Nommie, I admire the field you went into and would love to hear more about what you do. Having "three years left" sure sounds like a long time, but it is crazy how fast it goes by. Good luck on your articles!

I can hardly believe how much time has passed. Didn't seem like HotN was dormant for as long as it has been either, until I start looking at the dates of previous posts.

I graduated secondary school in May, 2011. I've been working for the same rural-based IT company for the past 4+ years. I started with software testing for one client for 1yr and then when that project ended moved onto doing support for a Canadian retail company. I get to work on a mainframe via VPN and use COBOL and JCL and work on projects like implementing the back-end for a new tender being accepted at their stores. It's pretty scary how much we can screw up! I'm really not sure how I feel about my job as I'm not particularly attached to it. I became a team lead after a couple years, so I am pleased with that. The biggest feat, in my opinion, is that myself and my team had no experience in retail or mainframes or COBOL and we learned on the fly and took over the positions of people that had been working there for 5, 10, and 15 years. Which is a shame they were replaced at all, but I guess that is the nature of business.

Last May I moved from Missouri to Colorado (1220km or 758 miles). My goal was to move from Missouri before I turned 25, so I succeeded with a few years to spare. I was allowed to keep my job and work remotely from home now, which makes sense because my actual client is Canadian based anyway.

I did not go to University. Sometimes I regret it and sometimes I am thankful. I do not like the idea of being in debt and having a loan for my car is already scary enough.

I'm working with my roommates/friends on a video game and its starting to come along, in an amateurish kind of way.

I've traveled around the United States a bit for vacations with friends. Sometime in July I'll be visiting Canada for vacation and received my passport the other day -- which is strangely exciting just to have one. I felt like I achieved a whole new level of adulthood to have a passport. Traveling everywhere is a huge goal of mine. I want to see it all while I am healthy and youthful! And then again and again as I age further.

Graduated secondary/high school in 2007 and graduated from university in 2012. I studied a law degree, but decided not to pursue it because the postgraduate fees to become a solicitor were too expensive and the job market there was quite rough. Plus deep down inside I don't think I did the degree because I had a love for law - I did it more so because my mother expected me to do it.

I then went and did a few odd jobs before getting a job in the city working for a headhunting company that works with CEO and other senior management positions. It pays well, but the longer I stay in the industry I realise my heart isn't in it. I used to tell people that I could work for a well paying job and not enjoy it, but that's not the case I think. It allows me to live a comfortable lifestyle though. But I'm probably going to leave in two years to either set up a business of my own or go into something more academic.

I did some travelling though. Went across Southern Africa and visited Nommie in Belgium. Took up muay thai. Thinking of doing an MBA soon.

That one guy from way back when

Joined the military in 2008, progressed from nooblet entry level to actually having some authority as a sergeant. Stayed in the states for the first 5 years of it, then asked for and received an assignment to Japan (where I am now).

Got married a couple years ago, a few months before leaving the States. She's also military, though her first assignment was in Germany (this is her second as well, but her first was only 2 years long).

I've only what college my service has given me as part of my official training. Though I could test out of a few things and basically have an associates (2 year) degree in Computer Sciences. Not that it would matter much because the career I'd go into is all cert or experience based. That said, I've served long enough that the US would pay for me to go to college if I opted to.

Beyond that, I'm in the process of getting my own business up and running, which will hopefully start up in the next couple of weeks. Online retail, perhaps mixed with doing online sales for brick & mortar businesses. Basically, I'd carry my own stock, but also contract to sell things online for businesses that maybe don't want to risk going wholly online yet or want to test the waters, so to speak.

EDIT - TLDR EDITION

Good stuff sorta happened, and bad stuff definitely happened. I have a terrible habit of oversharing or not talking to people at all.

I really wish I had some cider though.

All that in the quick reply? Are you insane my good man? Yeesh.

Quite the story though. Let me know if you want to play something, or if you want to do a collaboration or something.

Insane is a fairly apt word. I've been known increasingly as the crazy one by certain groups and individuals. My alter-ego even has titles such as The Mad King.

A collab? Like for youtube? That'd be awesome. I might get a few of my videos up and get my rear in gear first. I have a few videos lined up, but I still need to sound check the audio, rerecord if need be, edit the audio, then build the videos. Then I gotta come up with more scripts for more videos so I have a consistent supply of content.

Needless to say I read everything but SoS's tl;dr wall of doom. Nobody cares that much about your life buddy :}

Quick update on how life's been going for the past couple of years: Went into an Asian Studies degree in college, quit it because it wasn't that good and actually became a certified teacher of english as a foreign language. Moved to sunny Barcelona and have been living here for 2 and a half years doing call center work because I feel like I'm still too young to be a teacher and I'm getting paid pretty decently to lead a very chill life. A lot of weed, a lot of videogames, no parents in sight. It's like I've achieved my sweet 16 dreams at 24!

Awh, I didn't even get to see SoS' wall of doom. :/

And PW is only a year older than me? Am I 23? I can't even remember. I guess I am. What kind of money does call center work in Barcelona make? Around here it is pretty lackluster, but I guess that also depends what company you work for and the cost of living for the area.

I can always PM people the wall of doom if they're interested for god only knows what reason. It's pretty pessemistic and such though.

Eh, I've been working for a year and we haven't even gotten to data collection yet, let alone analysis and writing articles. I need to collect data for 3 studies and write 6 articles and get them published :p three years is terrifyingly little haha

As for some more information, I'm doing my PhD at the End-of-Life Care Research Group at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. The research group is also active at the University of Ghent (where I graduated and so I'm also technically a staff member there (albeit with a voluntary statute)). My research is part of a larger project called "INTEGRATE," a project that studies the integration of palliative care into hospitals, nursing homes, home care and the community. My project studies the integration of volunteer volunteers into palliative care in these settings.

That's the gist of it, anyway.

For Europe standards, Barcelona call center pays pretty well. I get paid 1200€ a month with the chance of an extra 350€ in bonus for basically taking like, 5 calls a day that sometimes last 5 minutes only. I am paying 380€ rent with expenses included (sharing a flat), meaning I get a lot of money to do whatever the fuck I want and I have a job that lets me stay on youtube and facebook all day long. I really can't complain.
