I recently told Nubi about the Pokemon Fan-Game me and my roommates were working on. For a few different reasons (including losing the most developed version of the game due to a fried comp) we ended up putting the project on hold. For a while, we still worked on it, although with less vigor. We only had a netbook to work with, so it was next-to-impossible to trouble-shoot the game, and eventually, we stopped even composing tracks for the soundtrack. We had made New Pallet (You'll probably notice the "Pokemon Ranch" area, spawned from the idea that most trainers have Pokemon other than the standard "3 starters" which players normally get): Posted Image And we have a ton of lore into what is happening where in the world, with tons of resources including new trainers (In order: BugCatcher, "Karp Trainer", Witchy Woman, Voodoo Kid, Mechanic (f/m) and one of my roommate, Catman): Posted ImagePosted Image Posted Image Posted ImagePosted Image Posted Image Including making a male AND female version of the Rival (we have our reasons, and no, it's not for a romantic sub-plot) Posted ImagePosted Image After a while, while gathering the resources to make this post, I realized something... There was no longer any reason to halt progress. I have a comp, I can continue making sprites, I can start coding minor stuff again... And I, inspired by HotN's FB page, have restarted the project via SOCIAL MEDIA~ I will be posting more about this project here, over time... including a second post where I will go over a few of our general ideas. Other ideas are out there, of course, but at the moment... I can't remember them. I have a list somewhere... I just need to find the notebook. Hello Zanaras... Edited by Chrono T., Jan 12 2016, 08:15 AM.

Congrats on starting your project back up! That's awesome to hear. I remember you being a pretty good pixel artist. Did you create some of those assets? Pallet Town has come a long way, I'm digging the expansion of it. What are you using to make the game? Also! If you are still working with other people on the project, you could maybe set up a repository for it. We use Tortoise SVN and one of us hosts the repository on their PC. It can be accessed inside our network and from outside of it. If everyone updates their local copies regularly (which they should) you have numerous living backups of the project and people can check in their updates from anywhere at anytime, which you can pull down on the fly. Something to keep in mind to prevent losing lots of work due to malfunction. |

Well, almost all of these assets are Franken-sprited together from other trainers and whatnot. I am making a few assets on my own, but a lot of it is ripped from older games. As I recall, the Witchy Woman is the one which I did the most work on, but I need to fix that up, as it got a bit too busy and a bit... oddly proportioned... But any time that we need something that didn't exist in another Pokemon game, or that wasn't quite what we wanted, for whatever reason, I'm the one who does the pixel art. (my buddies tried to help, but they are just... they are just awful at anything graphic-related) Catman is an ideas guy, he's helping me come up with features and concepts for the characters, but he's kinda retreated from the project more than most. D-Rock and Frankie-Bones are the ones who are doing the main of the world-building with me now. Also, Frankie-Bones is our composer. He's basically in charge of taking the original music and updating it to make it fit more with the ideas we're pumping into the new areas. Also, do you have any ideas for what we can do with Pewter? Because I am so stuck on what to do with Pewter that would be, in any way, interesting... |

My Pokemon world knowledge is limited, but here goes. Pewter is historically the first major location the player goes after leaving Pallet town and where they have their first gym battle with Brock. This would be the next logical location for the trainers after arriving at Pallet to start their journey. The first place they get to show their mettle as a trainer. Unless you have decided to open up more of the map from the beginning to players in your game? Will Brock still be the Gym Leader? If aging is relevant, he could be dead (his legacy lives on) or retired (a mentor). If age is irrelevant he's probably got a lot to keep him busy with the onslaught of new trainers wanting to challenge him. If the game is a single player experience he could be taking a vacation from all the new trainers and there might even need to be a side event to find him and convince him you are worth his time to battle. The biggest thing in Pewter seems to be the museum. This could be a place that players frequently come back to to turn in fossils or fossil fragments they find throughout the rest of the world, which contributes to some sort of mystery or reward for the player. Rock Smash has been used to find fragments and fossils. Aesthetically the museum could be updated with a new appearance and have different collections inside of it that have expanded within the last 100 years and provides interesting lore information. Strength (or Rock Smash), the ability, isn't ground/rock type. But it is used to move boulders. There could be a contest in Pewter that requires you have a Pokemon that knows Strength and if it is a high enough level/stat combination you can win the local contest by "pushing the boulder the furthest" compared to the NPC contestants. This would give the player a reason to come back to Pewter. And if Brock wasn't the current Gym Leader but is still alive: winning could bring him out of his retirement to challenge you as a bonus battle -- on the grounds he was impressed with how strong your Pokemon is. As far as design goes, I have no idea. It is "The Stone Gray City" which sounds pretty boring. I imagine it would have expanded in size to some degree as increased traffic to an area is usually an economical boon. |

-Claps enthusiastically- I love almost all of those ideas, Nubi. However, I WOULD like to remind you that Viridian City actually comes BEFORE Pewter. It's an incredibly common mistake, as it's actually the last gym you can visit, due to the leader being off doing nefarious things. That being said, I know you said your pokemon knowledge is semi-limited, so I won't hold that against you, heheh. Hrm... Yeah, but I DO like the rock-moving contest, the idea of having a Pokemon Trainer Red exhibit, and the expansion of the town has been one of our biggest hurdles. However, turnings a few locations in Pewter into interesting things (like the games, or the idea I had just yesterday, a sculpter) would be a nice way to expand the town while still keeping the same charm, heheh. Oh, as far as opening up the map from the beginning, well... It's a bit of a mixed bag. Basically, though we decided to take inspiration from Pokemon Origins which, rather than having a linear progression in trainer strength, the amount of Pokemon the leader uses (as well as their strength) is determined by how many badges the protagonist has. There are some locations that can't be reached until later, but due to the sea-port in Pallet, the player can also take the SS Anne to one of the other two ports... Haven't decided which yet... |

Hah! It's been so long since I've played any Pokemon game that I really couldn't tell you much of anything with any certainty. I even looked up cities and the region map when suggesting things. Anyway, sorry for the delayed response. How is your game coming along thus far? Did you make any design decisions? |
